Where to Save

Light Fixtures: One of the oldest tricks is to save on items that can be easily replaced. Light fixtures are a great DIY project in case you decide to revamp your bathroom’s aesthetic. In an effort to save money on other things, opt for conservatively priced fixtures during the rehab.

Cabinetry: Unlike the kitchen, bathrooms have few cabinets. Nowadays, homeowners can purchase pre-fab vanities and cabinets for fairly low costs. Another great way to save on cabinets is to give your existing ones a makeover. A bit of sanding and coat of staining or paint can go a long way!

Storage: Much like with cabinetry, pre-built, well-designed storage is very easy to find a great prices. This is also a great option for people who are redesigning their bathrooms in a certain aesthetic, like rustic-chic for instance, and are looking for a very particular type of piece.

Where to Splurge

Radiant Heat: Another great rule to live by is to splurge on things that will last a long time and are not easily replaces. Radiant floor heating is one of them. A system like this that saves energy and increases quality of life. Just imagine stepping onto warm floors in winter. Aside from the benefits, a system like this makes a lot of sense to install during a remodel as opposed to a separate project entirely.

Architect/Designer: Since very few homeowners are interior designers as well, hiring a professional to reimagine your space is a great investment.  However, architecture is worth the investment if you build. There are many people who spent money on beautiful plans but can’t afford to build them as designed. Keep that in mind when you are laying out your budget and be realistic about what you can afford to accomplish.

Towel Warmer: An amenity like a towel warmer turns your bathroom into a personal spa. Similar to the added comfort of heated floors, heated towels make the bathing experience cozier. Not to mention is comes in extra handy during winter.

Up to You

Faucets/Shower Heads: Of course you don’t want to go too cheap here, but good faucets and shower heads do not need to cost a lot of money. What is important is that they are of good quality and appeal to the design of your new bathroom.

Countertops: The key is keeping this surface clean—and low-maintenance is a main benefit of surfaces such as quartzite (CesarStone, Cambria, etc). But these surfaces can cost as much as middle- to lower-grade granite. So decide whether this will be a selling point of your bathroom, or if a laminate with a sharp pattern (that resembles granite) is acceptable.
