Having an island in your kitchen creates more countertop space, storage, and essentially, a “center” to your kitchen. Not only can you store appliances and prep meals on your island, but it can also play as a table, allowing you to share meals with your friends and family on it. With a variety of styles to choose from, you can transform your kitchen into a more welcoming, modern, and organized space. Here are some things to consider when selecting the perfect island for you.

  • Size. Kitchen islands can be as long in length and width as you’d like. Luckily, there isn’t any specific formula when designing or purchasing the perfect island for you. However, it’s important to consider what you will be using the island for. Will you be using your island to prep meals, to eat, or to store more appliances? If you are using your island for meal prepping and eating, you may like to have enough countertop space and have a specific height for seating. If you’re using your island for storage, you may want a lot of cabinets. Considering these factors can help determine the size of your kitchen island.

  • Integrating kitchen appliances in your island. For more countertop space for the rest of your kitchen, integrating appliances into your island would be ideal. If your island is going to be your main prep area, you will also need a trash nearby. You can also incorporate a sink, dishwasher, refrigerator, wine cooler, microwave, oven, or stove.  Placing kitchen appliances into your island will also depend on your kitchen layout. If your kitchen is large enough, divide your prep area to different sections of your kitchen to allow more countertop space on your island.

  • Style. What is the style of your kitchen? You can design your kitchen island around the theme. For a cohesive design, it’s important that the countertop of your island matches with the rest of your kitchen countertops. Will your island make sense with the rest of the kitchen? Since your kitchen island will be the main gathering area of the room, it’s imperative that it cosmetically fits in with the rest of the room. Would you be interested in using birch, granite, wood, tile, or steel? Do you like a contemporary, modern,or a vintage, rustic design? It’s important to consider the design to make sure it’s aesthetically pleasing.
