Much like the cabinets and countertops can dictate the design direction of a kitchen, so can a sink. The kitchen sink, stove, and table, are where people spend the most amount of time in the space. Why not make them the best they can be?

Knowing your kitchen’s main purpose can help you choose the right kind of material for your sink. Do you rarely cook and use the kitchen more for a meeting place, or are you an aspiring chef?

Choosing a kitchen sink doesn’t have to be complicated, but it should be a decision that is given a fair amount of thought. Here are some important points to consider when choosing a sink type.

Material

  • Stainless steel is the most commonly used material for not just aesthetic but sanitary reasons. A gauge is what classifies stainless steel. Lower gauge steel is heavier while higher gauge steel is lighter.
  • Cast iron is the oldest type of material used in sinks, just like in older bath tubs, and is still popular today. Cast iron sinks are covered in a porcelain enamel finish to prevent rusting, making them very heavy.
  • Composite sinks tend to be made of either a granite or quartz composite. Aside from the aesthetic benefits the come from composite sinks, industry experts say they are the most durable on the market.
  • Fireclay sinks are made of ceramic clay and are susceptible to chipping. They also tend to be expensive but often offer a custom look that many customers desire.

Design

  • Single bowl refers to a single basin sink, usually customizable to any shape or size depending on the material it is made of.
  • Double bowl means a double basin sink. Homeowners may choose to have one basin smaller than the other, or have the two as equal sizes.
  • A farmhouse design means that the sink is exposed on the forward facing side. This is also known as an apron sink.
  • Top mount sinks sit above the counters. These are also known as drop-in sinks and are easy to install. However, they don’t offer the sleek look many crave.
  • Under mount sinks are placed from underneath the counters. Many do not come designed with space for faucets so that’s something to keep in mind.

Once you’ve decided how your new kitchen will fit your lifestyle, making other decisions is even easier. Happy remodeling!
